Four Tummy Tuck Recovery Tips

Thinking about getting a tummy tuck? This is a popular procedure that can improve the appearance of your abdomen particularly after weight loss or childbearing. It is commonly part of a “Mommy Makeover” which restores both breasts and abdomen after childbearing, or as an independent surgery.  It is commonly used to tighten skin after significant weight loss.

Below, we’ll explain what a tummy tuck is and a few tips you should follow after your procedure in order to recover properly.

What Is a Tummy Tuck?

A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) can create a flatter, smoother abdomen through the removal of excess fat and skin, and the tightening of abdominal wall muscles that have relaxed.

A tummy tuck is available to both men and women. In men, it is most common in those who have lost a considerable amount of weight. On the other hand, women generally seek tummy tuck after having children because the abdominal wall, skin, and muscles have stretched and weakened. Several other gender-based considerations may be taken into account as well (such as where your scar will be situated). These will need to be discussed at your consultation appointment.

Arrange Post-Op Assistance

I call this person your caretaker. In addition to bringing you home post-surgery, he or she will monitor your progress, your medications, and be your coach. For many patients, this is a spouse or another family member. The person you choose should not only be with you on the day of the surgery, but they should accompany you to your initial consultation appointment as well. It is important that every detail of your recovery are shared.

Take it Easy to Ensure Proper Recovery

I see a lot of patients who want to “get up and go” right after their surgery. Although we encourage you to walk around a few times a day after your procedure, trying to move too fast or do too much is not something I recommend.

Your body requires adequate recovery and rest time after a significant surgery such as a tummy tuck. In the end, if you give yourself more time and rest, you’ll recover faster.

Generally speaking, the rest period after surgery is about two weeks, after which you may be able to return to work and a semi-normal routine. You will come in to see me each week for follow-ups for me to examine your results and tummy tuck recovery process.

Rest and Sleep in the Appropriate Positions

When sitting, you’ll need to find a resting position that is comfortable and does not strain the abdomen. When sleeping, it’s likely you’ll need to adjust your normal lying position, especially during the first few weeks after your procedure. I recommend sleeping on an incline to reduce tension on the newly tightened abdomen. A recliner is a good chair to have after a tummy tuck.

Wear Your Abdominal Pressure Garment

After your procedure, you will be given an abdominal pressure garment to wear for several weeks. Wearing this garment helps in the healing and recovery process. It will help reduce swelling and encourage the tissues to heal together. Gentle compression can also minimize the risk of fluid collections or bleeding.
