Putting Your Best Face Forward With a Facelift

facelift

As a board-certified plastic surgeon, I help my patients address the signs of facial aging on a daily basis. As plastic surgeons, we have many tools in our toolbox, so-to-speak, to help slow down, and in some cases, turn back the aging process… at least for a while.

While botox and fillers may be right for the younger patient trying to hide subtle changes of aging, chemical peels may do better for the next level of patients. And for those with finer lines and wrinkles, a facelift is a worthy option to explore. Specific situations where a facelift is a viable option would include any sagging of the jowls or loose skin under the neck.

Facelifts are always a delicate balance. In my opinion, they should be used to refresh the face but not to overly change it. When people see my patients postoperatively, I want them to look refreshed, not look like they had a surgical procedure. I have often said that plastic surgery is best when no one can tell that you’ve had it.

For my facelift patients, the planning does not stop with the surgery itself. It is important to take preventive measures so that the result lasts as long as possible.

Here are some facelift tips that can help keep your facelift gratifying as long as possible.

Moisturize

facelift recovery time

The effects of an average facelift will last anywhere from seven years to 10 years. This means that you’ll need to take good care of your facelift during this time. One of the most important elements of good facelift care is moisturizing.

After your recovery period is over, I recommend you moisturize at least twice daily (once in the morning and once at night). Choose a moisturizer with an SPF for during-the-day use, if possible. Doing so will surely extend the benefits of your facelift.

Wear Sunblock

One of the most important facelift tips I offer my patients is to always wear sunblock. I recommend using an SPF 30 on average days or a higher SPF on those days when you know you’ll be out in the sun for a longer period of time. The UV rays of the sun actually weaken the skin causing it to relax sooner. Wearing SPF will help the benefits of your facelift last longer.

Learn How to Contour With Makeup

One of the biggest benefits of a facelift is radiating smoother, more contoured skin — especially along your cheekbones. Learn to enhance these contours even more by expertly applying contouring bronzer, blush, and highlight.

Essentially, you want to accentuate the shadow beneath your cheekbones with some bronzer and blush and highlight the tops of your cheekbones, nose, and Cupid’s Bow with a highlighter.
