Instagram Dolls And Plastic Surgery: A Plastic Surgeon’s Take
What are Instagram Dolls? Chances are as soon as you heard the term, you imagined look-alikes of Kim Kardashian and Kylie Jenner – to name a few – with heavily contoured faces, high constructed eyebrows, and pillowy lips.
You’d think that social media would be more enthusiastic about championing diversity but that’s clearly not the case these days. People, especially young women, are striving to achieve the “Instagram face” look at an alarming rate.
And to achieve their goal, they seek as many cosmetic surgeries as it takes to look like their favorite Instagram celebrity.
The “Instagram Dolls” Plastic Surgery
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, over 1.8 million cosmetic surgeries were performed in the country in 2018 alone.
The fact that really worries me is this: in order to look “perfect” as cheaply as possible, a lot of people go to cosmetic surgeons with questionable practices.
In May 2019, a popular Instagram model’s mother lost her life during a cosmetic procedure in the Dominican Republic.
I know that women get bombarded with unrealistic images of beauty every day. There’s an army of social media “influencers” who get paid to advertise everything from weight loss tea to beauty-enhancing procedures. This makes it really hard to understand what’s real and safe.
We all want to have high cheekbones, we all want to have smooth skin, and we all want to look selfie-ready at all times. So, some of us figure, why not just get multiple surgeries to achieve that goal?
Getting cosmetic or plastic surgery is not wrong or unsafe in itself. There is nothing wrong with wanting to improve your appearance in a medically safe way. But it’s my job to give honest and realistic expectations of what can and can not be safely accomplished.
You Can Be Beautiful Without Compromising Your Safety
I often get clients who come to me with their edited selfies or a particular celebrity’s picture, and tell me “I want to look like that”. They tell me their new appearance will help them get more followers. I can’t tell you how much this bothers me.
I get it. The pressure to have a successful Instagram account with thousands – if not millions – of followers is real these days. But I will tell you the same thing I tell my clients: instead of asking your surgeon to make you look “Instagram-worthy”, listen to their professional medical opinion first.
It’s important to find a reliable, board-certified and experienced cosmetic surgeon whom you like and trust completely with your safety and results. And remember, the procedures you undergo, you’ll have to live with them for years, if not your entire life. Instead of chasing the Instagram dolls, focus on enhancing your features and not covering them!
