Don’t try this at home

This is a follow up to a blog I posed a few weeks ago about the pencil test. I am going to describe a sequence of operations that I really do not advocate but I hope makes sense when I describe it. Every month or two, I will see a woman with a double D or more breasts who wants me to do a breast lift and give them gravity defying breasts. Now I can do a breast lift on just about any size breast. The problem is that if I lift a large and heavy breast that breast will… Read More

Labiaplasty- reducing the size of the Labia

When I started performing Labiaplasty a number of years ago I had no idea how popular it would become. A patient once told me that she regretted not having had it done when she had her breast augmentation; she just didn’t know that I did it. Because of her I added a “while you’re at it” section to my D.C. breast webpage to point out surgeries that are commonly combined. Labial tissue comes in all shapes and sizes. Some have more, others less. Common concerns patients share with me include a self consciousness during sexual activity, difficulty wearing certain clothing… Read More

Male Breast Reduction

Gynecomastia means enlargement of the male breast tissue. There are a number of options in Male breast reduction and I just wanted to try to clear up a few things here in this blog. The most common reason for men to have enlarged breasts is unknown. While a very few patients will have a hormonal abnormality it is quite rare and does not change the surgical solutions. Rule of thumb: Gynecomastia surgery should be performed after puberty and is best performed at younger ages when the skin is more elastic and likely to shrink up when the tissue underneath is… Read More

Adam and Eve do Plastic Surgery!

I wasn’t looking for it and I didn’t even really think about it until a few weeks after Eve Pandit joined our team. A patient brought the irony to my attention. Yes, together with my Physician’s Assistant we have become Adam and Eve. So who is Eve? I could tell you about her amazing credentials and her extensive experience in the field of plastic surgery, but she is so very much more than that to me. She is a good person, a fine and kind and gentle human being with a soul a mile wide. She is my right arm,… Read More

Exchange Saline Implants for Silicone gel breast implants?

I recently put a special on my website offering patients with saline breast implants the opportunity to switch to silicone breast implants. I think it’s a wonderful opportunity for patients who have considered switching. So why switch to silicone breast implants? A silicone gel implant is softer than saline, mushier and generally more natural looking. A gel implant softens the transition from the chest wall to the upper portion of the breast. So who might make the switch? – If you wanted silicone in the first place but had your breast augmentation surgery back when silicone was not available in… Read More

The Joys of a go Kart

So this plastic surgeon, thanks to the urging of my 13 year old son, is finally building his first go kart. There is no plastic surgery message in this blog post other than for those of you who know me I love creating things with my hands in the operating room or at home in my garage. This summer, I attended two macramé classes with my daughter, and now the go kart. Just before the summer my son got the urge to have a go kart as he watched a friend in the neighborhood tool around on one his father… Read More

The Pencil Test

The internet has a lot of confusing and conflicting information and for those of you reading my blogs (and I hope you do) I try to clarify concept and give my personal experience. The pencil test is one of those topics. Somewhere, sometime, someone on the internet declared that if you could hold a pencil under the fold of your breast your breast was too droopy, your implant too saggy or your breast lift was not good enough. If you can’t hold a pencil under the fold then you have what I call “gravity defying breasts”. There are two groups of… Read More

Men, Liposuction, and the Military

Men tend to be more shy when it comes to cosmetic plastic surgery. While my practice is about 80% women here in the Washington D.C area the U.S. Military unknowingly sends me a steady stream of male patients. Military doctors have decided that one way to evaluate “fitness for duty” is to have a specific ratio of neck diameter to waist diameter. If this ratio is off a discharge could ensue. While I can’t really change the diameter of the neck, I have liposuctioned liters of abdominal and flank fat from servicemen (and women) at bases all over the Maryland,… Read More

Correction of Inverted Nipples through Breast Surgery

Congenital inverted nipples are more common than people realize. However, this problem can easily be corrected under local anesthesia and can also be treated during breast surgery whether undergoing breast augmentation, reduction and or breast lift. To release the nipples, a minor incision is made at the bottom of the nipple and the breast ducts which bind the inverted nipple are released. Release of the nipple which requires the release of the underlying ducts may affected breastfeeding and sensation. If an inverted nipple is a new finding it must be evaluated prior to correction to make sure that there is… Read More

Postpartum Restoration A.K.A. The Mommy Makeover

As the proud father of two beautiful children and a plastic surgeon, I have had the first hand opportunity to see how such a magnificent miracle can dramatically alter the female body. Hereditary, unpredictable, and often unfair, pregnancy is a body-altering experience. The body is incredibly intelligent and throughout pregnancy has the ability to change dramatically in response to the hormones associated with it. The breast become fuller, skin stretches and abdominal wall and pelvic muscles loosen, among other things. Unfortunately, the body does not always do as good of a job restoring itself. Following child-birth skin loses elasticity and… Read More
